Weekly Wellness Tips - Boost Your Immune System

It's that charming time of year again: Full of sniffles and coughs. The colder months can feel like a breeding ground for cold-and-flu-causing bugs.

These “bugs” are actually bacteria, fungi, and viruses, also called antigens. When infected, our immune system responds by trying to kill off the antigen before it causes damage.

Sometimes this is successful and we may not even know that we had a “bug” and sometimes it is not, causing us to get sick.

Your body wants to protect you, but it needs your help. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle keeps your immune system strong and ready to give any antigen the boot when need be.

In addition to eating the right foods, you should be taking care of your body in other ways.

Exercise

Regular exercise will stimulate the body’s immune system to stop viruses and
bacteria from causing damage. Gentle exercise, such as walking, is best for this.

Get Enough Sleep

Not getting enough sleep puts stress on your body and makes your immune system vulnerable. Having the proper amount of sleep is key to getting better if you are already sick.

Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff

Stress weakens the immune system. Remind yourself of the positive things in life and to address problems rather than stress about them. Find ways to reduce stress when it is present (e.g. talk to a friend, do yoga, read).

Wash Your Hands

This one is common knowledge! Wash your hands to decrease the number of antigens you may carry and to protect others around you.

Be Aware

There are a lot of “bugs” being passed around this time of year and staying aware of where they are likely to be found can help keep us safe. Any place where many people come together or pass through presents a risk of getting sick.

This may be a daycare center or even a gas pump. If you know someone is sick, avoid sharing utensils and use proper hygiene.
